Mining Network Traffic Anomalies

Jin Cao
Bell Laboratories, Alcatel-Lucent

Abstract:
Network administrators are routinely confronted with a wide range of unusual events, some of which, but not all, may be malicious. In this talk, we focus on behavior based approaches for network anomaly detection and diagnosis, which does not rely on attack signatures. We discuss our strategies which include exploratory analysis, online detection, and online summaries for diagnosis. We illustrate our method using experimental studies on network packet and flow traces.
